Brief Description

The research team (Cities Institute in partnership with Stockholm Environment Institute and the University of Salford) will develop and test new tools to deliver significant improvments in the walking environment of streets and other public spaces, especially in areas that are rich in built heritage but run-down and poor in most other respects. An innovative application of Geographic Information Systems for Participation (GIS-P) will enable 'lay' participants with in-depth local knowledge to contribute to the design on an equal footing with practitioners that offer specialist expertise - especially urban designers, transport and land use planners and heritage conservationists. The GIS-P tool will be piloted in areas of Hackney, York and Salford, where the public realm is being made accessible, safe and attractive, both to visitors and local users.
