Brief description

The significance of the creative industries in knowledge economies of developed and developing nations is widely acknowledged but capturing and measuring their scale and scope of this role is not fully understood. The Cultural Evidence Project seeks to develop novel ways of measuring the economic impact of the creative industries through improved mechanisms for storing, mapping, visualising and verifying shared data and innovative approaches to defining and measuring creative input to the economy. The project is hosted in the Cities Institute and led by Alan Freeman (LMBS Visiting Professor) in collaboration with Prof. Hassan Kazemian (Intelligent Systems Research Centre).

With the support of the Cultural Evidence Project team, Alan is currently working with Queensland University of Technology on a NESTA funded research project – Beyond the Creative Industries – Update and Dynamic Mapping. This builds on the QUT Creative Trident methodology to deliver an update of creative employment estimates in the UK, using the latest available data encoded with new industrial classifications and a Dynamic Mapping approach grounded in a wide definition of the knowledge economy.

Through the support of HEIF 5, Cities Institute is developing a web based open source data store with the aim of offering a data sharing and crowd validation service for the creative and cultural sectors. This service seeks to enhance existing research, policy and consultancy on the creative economy by enabling access to a wide variety of creative data and web based visualisation, interpretation and reporting. It is anticipated that this will support innovation in strategic analysis of the creative economy.
