Brief description

The shortage of capacity at operational and strategic levels has been recognised by Government in the delivery of the Sustainable Communities strategy. The Egan report Skills for Sustainable Communities, and the Urban Design Skills deficit highlighted following the Urban White Paper, all point to a structural weakness in the training of planning, design and regeneration practitioners, including education, health and community development activity. More integrated knowledge and skills are required in the training of architects and planners and those managing regeneration programmes in local government, health and voluntary sectors. Following the University's successful bid to the second round of Higher Education Innovation Fund, Cities Institute are undertook a review of skills for the regeneration sector in London. The research involved training needs surveys with regeneration and professional bodies, education and training providers, and piloting workshops, tasters and consultation events. This will led to the development of 'post-experience', Masters-level and Continuing Professional Development provision.
