Maria Tsouroufli

Senior Research Fellow

I am an educationalist with an interdisciplinary background in gender, medical sociology and the sociology of professions. I hold a PhD in Gender and Education from the University of Southampton and I am a primary school teacher by trade. I joined IPSE in October 2013 after a long career in health professional education. Previously I held senior research/academic positions at the University of Lincoln, Warwick, Cardiff, Norwich Medical School, University of York and the Centre for Medical Education at the University of Dundee.

My work examines power issues, exclusion and gender discrimination in educational and organizational contexts locally and globally. I am particularly interested in gendered notions of professionalism and ‘othering’, academic identities and intersecting inequalities in higher and professional education in the UK, Greece and Jordan. I am a feminist with a passion for reflective, critical work and narratology. My current work is concerned with international PhD student identities and hybridization; secondary school students’ notions of community and diversity in Britain; the gendered identities of female Greek Professors and the negotiated identities of part-time EdD students. At IPSE I teach on the EdD programme and supervise EdD and PhD students.
