Jayne Osgood

Professor of Education

I am a sociologist of education focusing specifically on early childhood education and care. I am particularly concerned to research issues of inequality relating to gender, social class and ‘race’ and to critically deconstruct and problematise educational policy. As a feminist I am committed to developing and applying critical post-structuralist feminist theorisations to my work and regularly publish in this area. Details about my recently published book Narratives from the Nursery: Negotiating Professional and Identities in Early Childhood can be found here.

My research interests include:

  • Gender and Early Childhood Education
  • Discourse Analytic Methods
  • Feminist Theory
  • Education Policy
  • (Professional) Identity Constructions
  • Childhood and the Family

At London Metropolitan University I also co-ordinate the PhD programme and I am module leader on the Doctor of Education (EdD) programme in IPSE and available for PhD supervision and examination related to the expertise outlined above. I currently supervise PhD, EdD and Masters students. I have supervised students to completion and examined doctoral theses. Further to student supervision I sit on various committees and panels including the Research Student Progress Group and the Research Ethics Review Panel. I am Visiting Professor at University Western Sydney, Australia working closely with scholars there to identify collaborative research and publication opportunities. I was a founding member of Early Childhood Action (www.earlychildhoodaction.com) an interdisciplinary movement offering an alternative approach to early childhood education policy and curriculum.

I am co-editor (with Professor Ann Merete Otterstad, University College Oslo, Norway) of the Reconceptualising Educational Research Methodology (RERM) journal. Further editorial work includes board membership to the following journals:

I am Book Reviews Editor for CIEC and I guest edited a special issue in 2006 on Professional Identities in the Early Years.  In addition to editorial work, I act as an academic referee for a wide range of academic journals and I am active in various networks and forums, for example Reconceptualising Early Childhood Education.
