Teach First: an evaluation of new approaches to ITT

Funded by:

the Teacher Training Agency

Timescale:

September 2003 — December 2005

Teach First attracts graduates to work as teachers for two years in challenging secondary schools. Teach First, a business-led organisation with charitable status, recruits able graduates and places them in schools. During their first year they work as unqualified teachers and follow an employment-based initial teacher training route designed to lead to Qualified Teacher Status; this is provided by Christ Church University College, Canterbury. In their second year they work as Newly Qualified Teachers, and undertake some leadership training provided by the Tanaka Business School at Imperial College, London. Following this, they may either stay in schools, or move on to a career in business or some other sector.

The aim of this evaluation was to ensure that Initial Teacher Training as a whole is able to benefit from any successful innovative practice developed through the Teach First programme. The implementation of innovative features is being traced and examined in order to gain insights into how, and to what extent, they might be utilised elsewhere.

The first cohort of Teach First participants were followed throughout the two years of the programme, and the second cohort through their first year.

Regular reports on the progress of the evaluation were submitted to the Teacher Training Agency.
