Survey of Black Staff in Further Education in England

Funded by:

Commission for Black Staff in Further Education

Timescale:

May 2001 — April 2002

The Black Staff in Further Education Project was set up in May 2001 to investigate the position of Black staff in the FE sector.

The research was conducted in two stages:

Stage 1:National Survey

A questionnaire was sent to all further education and sixth form colleges in England to gather data on the numbers and positions of Black and White staff in colleges, as well as information about equality policies and procedures.

Stage 2: Case Studies

In-depth case studies of eight colleges, selected to take into account rural/urban differences, region and the numbers of Black staff in post, took place in Autumn 2001. Two members of the research team spent a week in each college and collected data through an employee questionnaire, interviews and focus groups with different groups of staff.

The research team produced a final report for the Commission for Black Staff in Further Education in April 2002.
