Studying for a Research Degree [PhD or MPhil]

We supervise a number of research degree students, most of whom are studying part-time.

A PhD in Education normally takes 3- 4 years on a full-time basis, and 7 — 8 years on a part-time basis. It entails developing research skills [often through University evening courses] and conducting your own research study, culminating in a thesis of up to 80,000 words. A PhD constitutes an original contribution to knowledge and understanding.

An MPhil is generally shorter study, taking 2 years full time, or 4 years part-time, and running to about 40,000 words.

Students starting a PhD will normally already have a Master’s degree with a substantial element of relevant research training. If a student does not have this, they will initially register for an MPhil degree with the possibility of transfer to a PhD. They will complete their research training, initiate their research study, and prepare a ‘transfer report’ on this, which will then allow them to move on to PhD registration. This whole process should not extend the total period of study.

Our recent PhD students have competed theses on subjects such as

  • Turkish children and bilingualism
  • The construction of cross-curricula themes
  • Children’s construction of work

Students are currently working on theses on

  • European Schools and European identity
  • Subject and career choices of Asian pupils
  • New media and identity in Maltese children
  • School-home communications
  • School improvement in Greece
  • Equality and attainment in schools
  • Women teachers’ careers in France and England

Some students are resident outside the UK, and study at a distance with regular contact with supervisors, and short periods of attendance at the University.

Applications and enrolment for Research degree study is through the University’s Graduate School office. However, we are happy to informally discuss ideas and opportunities with prospective students. If you wish to do this, please contact us to arrange a meeting.
