Mike joined London Met in September 2004 and is a graduate of the universities of Galway (Ireland), Kent, Grenoble (France) and London (King''s College). He has previously taught as lecturer at the University of Bordeaux (France) and at Liverpool John Moores University. His main teaching interests lie in the subjects of Public Law, EU Law and Refugee and Asylum Law in its European context. His research interests lie in the areas of Comparative, European and UK Public Law, and focusing in particular on the philosophy and application of Human Rights in Europe. Of special interest to his research plans is the move towards formalising rights protection in the form of Bills of Rights, conventions and monitoring bodies. This marks a move away from political mechanisms and activities.

He is presently researching a Ph.D thesis on the European Union Charter of Fundamental Rights and its significance in signposting the values and ethics of the emerging EU polity under the supervision of Professor Peter Fitzpatrick of Birkbeck College, University of London. The EU Charter is a catalogue of rights which the European institutions and Member States acting as their agents (i.e. implementing EC law) will have to respect. Mike's work investigates whether there can be a "uniform" European ethics or notion of human rights, to be eventually given a constitutional value in the form of the Charter. Part of his work was published in the first English language book on the Charter (The EU Charter of Fundamental Rights: text and commentaries Federal Trust/Kogan Page 2000) and in the second edition of The EU Handbook (Fitzroy Dearborn 2002). He has also published work on the Northern Ireland Human Rights Commission (''Towards a Northern Ireland Bill of Rights'' Liverpool Law Review No1 2001 pp 33-56).

Mike is a member of the Executive Committee of the Socio-Legal Studies Association (SLSA) and organised the association's national postgraduate conference at Liverpool John Moores School of Law in January 2004. He was also a key organizer of a regional conference on Refugee and Asylum issues that took place at the same venue in March 2004.
