Jonathan Watkins

Jonathan Watkins has a background in managing and teaching community and hospital mental health services in the UK.

He left employment in 2001 after working as a social work practitioner and commissioning manager, having participated in hospital closure and community care programmes. 

Internationally, Jonathan has provided consultancy to UNICEF and the Children’s Legal Centre in Kazakhstan, Kosovo, Tanzania, Malawi and Antigua & Barbuda on child protection and juvenile justice.  He works with NGO HealthProm in the Russian Federation, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan to support vulnerable families and develop alternatives to institutional care of children.  He worked with the Institute of Psychiatry WHO Collaborating Centre on improving adult mental health services in the Russian Federation and Kenya. 

Jonathan's interests are models of psychosocial support for individuals and communities recovering from violent conflict, deinstitutionalisation and support for vulnerable families in isolated rural areas. 

In the UK, Jonathan provides expert witness to the Court of Protection and at Mental Health Review Tribunals.  He teaches social workers on social work law, community care and issues of personality disorder.
