Dr Dipti Bhagat

Art & Design History and Conservation Research Group Co-convenor

Research interests
Design History: cultural and historical geographies of imperial display and spectacle, early-mid 20th century; modernism as implicated in urban planning and design in southern Africa; material and visual cultures of African diaspora communities in London.

Pedagogy of design and design history: action research to enhance and embed academic writing in design teaching and learning through Writing-in-the-Disciplines approaches; widening participation research in Art and Design; developing inclusive teaching and learning practices.

Eastender Archive Project
Academic convener: ‘On the Fringe’. ‘On the Fringe’ is the present collaborative design project that brings together interior designers and textile designers working specifically with the new materials, processes and design methodologies available in the Digital Manufacturing Centre. ‘On the Fringe’ is concerned with the meeting of digital and craft methodologies in design practice.

i) The fortification of Spain in the 13th & 14th centuries (book project).
ii) The mining of alum in Spain between the fall of Constantinople and the inauguration of Tolfa (journal article).
iii) Aristocratic factions in Spain (conference paper).
iv) Issues in the restoration of mediaeval castles in Spain (ongoing consultancy).

Research interests
The trading of timber in the eighteenth and nineteenth century, furniture history, Jamaican and American colonial furniture and the Departments Frederick Parker Collection of chairs, carvings and its archive.

Current research and projects
Cataloguing the Frederick Parker Collection of chairs and carvings
Researching for future publication on Jamaican colonial furniture
Ongoing research on American furniture manufacture and its influence on the Caribbean
Contributing to 2007 exhibition at the Institute of Jamaica, Kingston, Jamaica on furniture and furniture makers of Jamaica. .

Clifford Deighton

Research interests
Conservation of the Parker chairs. This work is practical based and includes student involvement, i.e. working on live projects, which may include research into materials and treatment.
Carving: Gothic chairs for the Strawberry Hill trust.
Moulding and Casting for the replacement of decorative elements on furniture and objects.
Construction of Sadeli ware objects.
Setting up a summer conservation course for gilding conservators in practice.
Pink Floyd: before year 2000!

Conservation of the Parker chairs
Producing a conservation and treatment report for the collection.
Consultancies, which include Royal Thames Yacht Club, Tate Frames Conservation Department, Guildhall Art Gallery, and Sutton House Hackney (National Trust).
Setting up an award supported by Classic Hand Tools for Foundation/HND students.
Getting charitable status for the John Anderson Scholarship.

Alexander Schouvaloff

Research interests
Lacquerwork and japanning, traditional and modern approaches to the conservation there of.
18th & early 19th Century English provincial lacquer long-case clocks: how, where and by whom were these japanned.

"The Geffrye Museum’s Blue Japanned Corner Cabinet." Article published in ICON News, Mar ‘07
" Blue japanning, with particular reference to the Geffrye Museum Corner Cabinet." Paper delivered at the David Harris Conference, March ’07.
Conservation work carried out for the refurbishment of the Geffrye Museum galleries.
Conservation work and advice on collections care for Emery Walker House.
Research into replacement options for Russian filigree carved ivory.
