Commission to create audio visual performance environment for contemporary dance work

Flap and Bye are two contemporary dance works by choreographer Sarah Warsop, designed to incorporate video in their performance. The commission was to create a stage-based aural and visual performance environment, rather than the traditional music composition and staging built to accompany dance.

The aim of the research was to create a performed audio-visual environment as a monolithic compositional element. The audio-visual work for both Flap and Bye were works independent of the choreography, yet both functioned to incorporate the choreography as though all were of a single piece.

The starting point for Bye was "how different people say goodbye", from sound, through text, to gesture. Flap was a far more intimate and ambiguous work, choreographed for a single dancer, and requiring a single monolithic projected image.

A prototype media server system, the Hippotizer, developed by Green Hippo Ltd., was customized to act as a performance tool. Although designed as a video delivery tool, the Hippotizer was used for both audio and video delivery for the AV "composition". It was modified, adding a MIDI implementation of video control, allowing both audio and video to be "performed" from a single music keyboard.

The first run of performances (five in total) began February 6, 2003 at Queen Elizabeth Hall, London. A second run of Flap was performed at Tate Britain, and a final run of both works was performed at the Linbury, Royal Opera House (as a result, the Hippotizer is now the stage standard at the Royal Opera House).

The works received positive reviews from The Guardian, The Times, Time Out London, The Evening Standard, i-D Magazine, The Stage, and others. The work also led to two commissions from the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden.
