Sir John Cass Department of Art, Media and Design

Auction to Feature Work by Famous Artists

Third Year students from the BA Fine Art course at the Sir John Cass department of Art, Media and Design have organised an auction of art by some very well known artists to help raise funds for their end of year show catalogue. It will take place on April 4 at the department’s Unit 2 Gallery, with an exhibition of the work available from March 31.

The pieces on sale at the event, entitled Ought to be Bought will include work by House of O’Dwyer, Bob and Roberta Smith, Spencer Tunick and Chantal Joffe, a first edition catalogue signed by Gilbert and George, as well as work by many of the artists who teach at the department. A group of students beat the queues and obtained several of the works at the renowned Free Art Fair in October last year and subsequently donated them to the auction. BA Fine Art student Kirsty Wood explains, "We staked the fair out all day from a pub across the road, and slept rough over night in cardboard boxes, to make sure we were first in line for the best works available." Having this initial collection to build on, the students attracted other artists to donate pieces.

The auctioneer for the event is appropriately something of a celebrity too. "Lord Shoreditch" is the alter-ego of flamboyant designer and style guru Steve Edge of Steve Edge Design, who is highly experienced with a gavel and promises to keep the show extremely entertaining and profitable.

The auction is one of a series of events the students are conducting in order to raise £5000 for a catalogue and promotional materials. They are also hoping to find advertisers and sponsors for the catalogue. Other activities to date have included a cake sale, music nights at the student union and poker games.

Venue - Unit 2 Gallery, Whitechapel High Street
Exhibition - 31 March-4 April 12:00pm-6:00pm
Open Auction - 6:00pm-8:00pm, 4 April
