Research Interests

Interactive arts, performance/installation, contemporary arts, computer music, digital video, music composition, new aesthetics, transformed into art materials and expressions, new techniques, music and technology, cultural diversity and interaction.

Ph.D Musical Arts, DMA - Columbia University, New York City, USA (2003) Thesis: REFLECT - The Third Level of Play, Interactive music/dance/video (Max/MSP/Nato), in collaboration with American dancer and choreographer Christina Towle.

M.A. Music, MA - Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil (1997) Dissertation: Unusual Ensembles in Brazilian Chamber Music since-1960, Analysis on timbre, texture and musical form and their interaction in the development of a specific repertoire.

B.A. Music - Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil (1994) Final Project: Palavras [Words], for soprano, alto and two chamber orchestras. Based on selected poems by Brazilian writer Arnaldo Antunes.

The broken is the beautiful (with Cecile Daroux, alto flute) 2010 - Current research/work in progress - an interactive music performance with real-time audio processing via video interface.

LHRNRT - live video & sound, 2010 - an improvisational performance of real-time video and real-time sound, in collaboration with Johnathan F. Lee (RT sound). Presented at the ICMC 2010 - International Computer Music Conference, in NYC & Stony Brook, USA, June 2010.

[wɔ:l bɔ:l] - interactive wall ball interface, 2008/2009 - a playful interactive wall installation, which explores the themes of identity and position, with Alexander Wendt, Luke Hastilow and Anne Berndt.

REFLECT, 2001/2002 - Interactive music/dance/video (Max/MSP/Nato) with dancer/choreographer Christina Towle. This work became the Doctor's dissertation of the author. Finalist for the Prix SCRIME 2003 (composer's competition) with the version WHITE REFLECT, released in the Prix SCRIME CD in 2004.

Expo74 - San Francisco, USA, 2009. Attended the first Max/MSP/Jitter international user conference. Participated on a field trip to collect data later used in a group project presented on the closing day of the conference. Support: Teaching and Research Staff Development Programme.

Modding Workshop: [wɔ:l bɔ:l], 2009. Coordinated a two-day workshop on the Max/MSP/Jitter programming of the [wɔ:l bɔ:l] installation at InIVA, Institute of International Visual Arts, London, as part of the exhibition Liminal: A Question of Position.

New York City Electroacoustic Music Festival, 2009. A program of concerts, installations, papers, demonstrations and other events at the CUNY (City University of New York) Graduate Centre. Work: [wɔ:l bɔ:l] - interactive wall ball interface.

Liminal at Rivington Place, 2009. An exhibition curated by INIVA and supported by the Department of Applied Social Sciences at London Metropolitan University that transformed Rivington Place in East London. Work: [wɔ:l bɔ:l]- interactive wall ball interface.

MTCRG - Music, Technology and Culture Research Group Seminars, London Metropolitan University, 2009. Lecturers Alexander Wendt, Elaine Thomazi Freitas and Luke Hastilow presented a documentation of their German experience at the Kammermachen #2 - annual arts festival from August 2008.

DAMTAG - Digital Media Arts and Technology Group, London Metropolitan University, 2009. A presentation and interactive demonstration of technology, installation and performance made with colleagues Alexander Wendt and Luke Hastilow on their German experience at the Kammer Machen #2 - annual arts festival from August 2008.

Kammer Machen #2 - annual arts festival, Chemnitz, East Germany, 2008. A week-long residency at the gallery was followed by the opening evening and weekend of exhibition at Weltecho gallery, presenting a collective of interactive art installations.
