JCAMD Course Leader in Top 50 Designers List

Assa Ashuach, internationally acclaimed product and furniture designer, and course leader of new MA suite programme Designworks at London Metropolitan University, has been included in The Guardian newspapers’ Top 50 Designers list, which celebrates the very best of design talent in the UK.

Judges on the panel for the list published on 1 September, heaped praise on the Israeli-born and London-based designer: ‘Assa Ashuach redefines everyday objects with his distinctly surreal design aesthetic’.

Assa’s work is displayed at the Design Museum, London's museum of international contemporary design, and includes the ‘501 Chair’ which fits the body like trousers, the single piece ‘Upica’ sofa which appears to support itself, and the Free Axis Movement (FAM) light designed to illuminate a long working desk.

Michael Upton, Academic Leader in the Sir John Cass Department of Art Media and Design (JCAMD) at the University, said: ’this is great news for Assa and for the Department. Our courses in art, media design are largely practice based with a view of preparing students for careers in the creative industries and having Assa, a world-class practitioner on the team, is a fantastic asset’.

From 21 September to 18 October, the public will have an opportunity to view Assa’s latest collection at the Rabih Hage Gallery in Chelsea. The show, which coincides with the London Design Festival and Frieze Art Fair, is an opportunity to view new work that makes full use of advanced design and production technologies.

Of the show, Assa said: ‘more than ever the pace of technological progress is increasing exponentially and the evolution we can expect within the next two years is likely to surpass the progress seen in the last ten years.’

This new collection of design comprises the AI Light, Fly Light, Upica Chair, Upica Soft Chair, Half Dining Table and the Venturi Stool.
