JCAMD Academic showcases work in Japan

A chair designed by William Warren, Senior Lecturer in Furniture and Product Design at Sir John Cass Department of Art, Media and Design has been featured in Metropolis, Japan’s largest distribution English Language Magazine. Warren is also looking forward to a solo show in Tokyo next month, where he will showcase five new pieces of work developed in Japan. The show will be launched on 0ctober 31, the start of design week in Tokyo.

JCAMD host major international textiles event

The Sir John Cass Department of Art, Media and Design (JCAMD) hosted the fourteenth bi-annual international conference in collaboration with the European Textile Network (ETN) on Digital Craft from 13 to 21 September 2007. Over 200 delegates from 74 institutions in 14 different countries attended the event.

JCAMD academic features on BBC Radio 3

Elaine Pierson, Senior Lecturer in the Sir John Cass Department of Art, Media and Design (JCAMD), was invited to appear on Night Waves, Radio 3's flagship arts and ideas programme, to discuss the current state of the ethics of television editing.

The item, which was broadcast on 17 September, was inspired by recent high profile revelations about documentaries misrepresenting their subjects and the banning of some editing techniques by Five News.

Metlab success showcased at Edinburgh International Film Festival

Metlab, a Continuing Professional Development (CPD) programme for screenwriters offered by London Met’s Sir John Cass Department of Art, Media and Design (JCAMD), was invited to deliver an event for film industry professionals at this year’s Edinburgh International Film Festival, the longest running film festival in the world.

Having already been screened on SKY TV (read more here), and following a successful run at the Portobello Film Festival (read more here), Jesse and Daniel Quinones' documentary - ‘Cage Fighter’ has now been selected for the International Student Film Festival in Hollywood.

JCAMD Course Leader in Top 50 Designers List

Assa Ashuach, internationally acclaimed product and furniture designer, and course leader of new MA suite programme Designworks at London Metropolitan University, has been included in The Guardian newspapers’ Top 50 Designers list, which celebrates the very best of design talent in the UK.

Assa has also been invited to speak at Time Compression Technologies (TCT) Event, the world’s largest conference on rapid product development and rapid manufacturing, in Coventry on 26 and 27 September. He will give a presentation on the making of the Osteon Chair (pictured left) and the Al Stool, products he developed as part of his research at JCAMD, using the state-of-the-art facilities at the Department’s digital manufacturing centre, Metropolitan Works.

JCAMD students work on major restoration project

Furniture Restoration students from the Sir John Cass Department of Art, Media and Design have produced sofas for Sir Robert Walpole’s House in Chelsea, as part of a major restoration programme. The students conducted extensive research into the construction and upholstery techniques of 18th Century Furniture, and used prints from the period to calculate the size of the William Hallet sofas before creating the detailed replicas... read more

The Big Draw East- Drawing Things Together

Mark Lewis and Steven Follen from the Sir John Cass Department of Art, Media and Design have been invited to deliver workshops at the Museum of Childhood as part of the national launch event for ‘The Big Draw’ now in its eight year. The event is organised by the Campaign for Drawing to celebrate drawing and its place in the world and will see 1000 free events take place all over the UK over the next month.

The first day, called ‘The Big Draw East- Drawing Things Together’ takes place at 20 venues in Hackney and Tower Hamlets on Sunday 30th September. The day will be launched by renowned artist and illustrator Quentin Blake the V & A Museum of Childhood in Bethnal Green.

Goldsmiths Fair

24 September - 7 October 2007

David Goodwin and Alan Craxford from The Sir John Cass Department of Art, Media and Design will be among those exhibiting contemporary jewellery and silverware at the 25th Goldsmiths Fair over the next two weeks. The Fair, the largest of its kind in the world, is an annual selling exhibition attended by 160 leading designer-makers.

The event, organised by The Goldsmiths Company, takes place the Goldsmiths Hall London EC2 from the 24th September to the 7th October, and prices start from around £100.

Assa Ashuach Exhibition at Rabih Hage Gallery, Chelsea

21 September - 18 October 2007

A collection of new work by JCAMD course leader Assa Ashuach will be on display at the Rabih Hage Gallery, in Chelsea from September 21st - October 18th 2007. At the show, which will coincide with London Design Festival and Frieze Art Fair, Assa will present a collection that imbues a surreal design aesthetic, new work that continues to make use of advanced design and production technologies. Assa, who is responsible for the ‘Designworks’ MA courses, has been described as one of the most innovative designers working in the UK today. He said of the show, ‘More than ever the pace of technological progress is increasing exponentially and the evolution we can expect within the next two years is likely to surpass the progress seen in the last ten years.’

This year's MA show at John Cass Department of Art, Media and Design will open on Thursday 6 September at Central House, with a private view from 6 - 9 pm. The exhibition will continue until Tuesday 11 September. See the MA show website for more details.

ETN digital//craft Conference and surrounding events

14 - 21 September 2007

digital//craft will be the next European Textile Network (ETN) bi-annual conference - scheduled to take place in London in September 2007.

This is a networking and strongly research initiating event. The ETN is a high profile organization, developed by the editors of the trade journal 'Textile Forum' to form international links between textile researchers, curators, practitioners, writers and students.

On the Fringe is the name given to one of the supporting events surrounding the conference and will showcase a Design and Technology research initiative culminating in the exhibition and a conference contribution exploring the use of digital manufacture for Interior Textiles.

The ETN post-conference workshops are a series of one, two and four day workshops providing hands-on experience of digital craft processes.
