programme notes

This piece was composed and finished in 2001-2 as a commission by the Luxembourg Sinfonietta and the Luxemburger Gesellschaft für Neue Musik.

The piece was composed with an evolutionary form, considering the following aspects:

- The characteristics of each one of the instruments to have some kind of virtuoso solo participation at some point during the work.

- The unusual combination of timbres at my disposal with the instrumentarium available.

The main contribution to the field for this piece is the search for expression through music’s dramaturgy, a subject that has been worked and published by me in several pieces and writings, for instance my PhD Thesis and my final dissertation at the Folkwang Hochschule in Essen (Germany). However, there is no publication regarding this particular piece.

From its intrinsic dramaturgy point of view, the piece belongs to what I categorize as "dramaturgy a-posteriori", meaning that the dramaturgy of the piece is left to the listener without any indication from the composer (apart from the title). The title refers to the concept of "changes" of the whole compositional process. These take multiple shapes and meanings throughout the piece: on one side, the changing of instrumentation in each of the different formal sections of the piece; on the other side, the almost constant changes of tempo (sometimes dynamically, sometimes statically) which subsequently change the mood from section to section, complemented by extreme contrasts in the pitch registers used. The first part of the title, "L.S.", refers to the group which commissioned the piece.

In common with much of my research, this item is a musical composition, in the tradition of contemporary music (pure instrumental in this case).
