Twentieth Century Graphic Communication: Technology, Society and Culture

The Codex Project is a pedagogical research paper reflecting upon the impact of traditional technologies (Letterpress) on contemporary higher education teaching & learning. Co-authored with two other researchers within Graphic Design, this paper utilises approaches undertaken within a case study (Central Saint Martins) and related practising graphic designer and journalist interviews to identifying a range of issues relating to the role of new and traditional technologies skills learning.

The research project was undertaken in response to the challenges facing graphic design education, in particular the design strategies employed by graphic designers in the advent of the technological revolution. The paper questions how the introduction of the computer in the 1980's has affected the teaching of contemporary graphic design and what effect it has had on the practice of design within the design industry. Through the examination of a defined teaching and learning model (within Letterpress), the paper identifies skill and its relationship to creativity and play.

This project continues ongoing research themes identifying relationships between design and creativity and technological processes.

As well as being presented at the St Bride conference, the entire paper was published in Typographics Magazine, Issue 60. The research was reviewed in Anne Odling-Smee, Hannah Ford The New Handmade Graphics: Beyond Digital Design, RotoVision, 2003 and was cited by Eye magazine, Autumn 2005.
