work: Paul Neagu - Horizontal Rain
a video poem

event details

Paul Neagu - Horizontal Rain is a documentary poem dedicated to the memory of the Romanian sculptor Paul Neagu (1938-2004). Neagu, who worked in London for many years, was the complex and uncompromising artist considered by many to be the spiritual heir of Constantin Brancusi.

The film explores the rich visual interaction between Neagu’s and Brancusi’s creative sculptural researches as well as the profound influence of Transylvanian folk traditions and imagery on the work of both artists. This documentary continues my own researches into film language through an investigation of the dialectic between film image and sound / music.

It is intended as a live performance in its own right and will be premiered at the Romanian Cultural Institute in London on December 12 2007 as part of an event entitled The Nature of Memory & Truth - a premiere screening of two visually innovative video documentaries as a performance with live music and HD projected visuals. This event is a collaboration with composer and performer Alexander Balanescu.

We intend to tour the film to other European and US RCI branches in 2008 and to arrange for a special performance event at MNAC - the National Museum of Contemporary Art in the People’s Palace in Bucharest.
