Sir John Cass Department of Art, Media and Design

Double Success for JCAMD Jewellery student

Blue Barkes, a Second Year undergraduate student on the BA Silversmithing an Jewellery course at the Sir John Cass Department of Art, Media and Design has been offered and has accepted a place on the prestigious summer School run by The Goldsmith’s Company. In addition to this success, Blue has been offered a work placement with internationally renowned fashion designer Alexander McQueen.

This week-long course will be provided by the Goldsmiths’ Company for a small group of motivated second year jewellery and silversmithing design undergraduates selected from across the UK. This event is designed to build upon the success of the annual Getting Started graduate business course which the Company runs each year. Only two applications per UK college were allowed and only 20 places were available, so the selection process was extremely competitive.

Speaking about her placement at Alexander McQueen, Blue said, "I’m delighted. I started only this week and I will do monday to wednesday every week until August. I have only had a little glimpse so far! But I have found it amazing, especially having an insight into the famous design studio’.

The Goldsmiths' Company is one of the Twelve Great Livery Companies of the City of London. It has been responsible for hallmarking since 1300 and, today, operates Assay Office London and supports the craft and industry of silversmithing and precious metal jewellery.

East End born Alexander McQueen is one of the most influential and sometimes controversial British fashion designers, and is currently opening an international chain of his own stores.
