Sir John Cass Department of Art, Media and Design

Jewellery students’ work to be sold at Red Cross Christmas Market

Twelve Foundation Degree Jewellery students from the Sir John Cass Department of Art, Media and Design will have their work on display for sale at the famous Red Cross Christmas Market at the Guildhall at the end of November.

At the market over 100 stalls will be selling an eclectic mix of merchandise not found on the high street: from funky designer bags and belts to Fair Trade crafts, international foods and bargain new and nearly new designer items. The event will be launched by the Lady Mayoress in the presence of Her Royal Highness Princess Alexandra on the preview night, Monday 26 November and will be open to the public on 27 and 28 November.

The market forms the culmination of a project for students on the Foundation Degree Design (Silversmithing, Jewellery, Allied Crafts) and Fashion Jewellerythat assists the students to develop products suitable for batch production. The brief for the project states that the jewellery must be produced in low-cost materials using simple manufacturing techniques and that designs must reflect the humanitarian values of the British Red Cross and the spirit of the City of London. Proceeds from the sale of the jewellery items will be contributed to Red Cross funds. The students will also assist in advertising, displaying and selling the product. As part of the event, the Red Cross will award certificates for satisfactory completion of the project and the Worshipful Company of Horners, one of the ancient Livery Companies of the City of London, will sponsor an award for the most effective use of plastics or horn in a range of jewellery.

Michael Upton, Academic leader at the department said, "This is a great example of a project where students develop their work in a professional context - helping them become commercially aware, critical practitioners. Better still it reflects our links with the City or London and will help raise funds for a major international charity."
