Sir John Cass Department of Art, Media and Design

Origin crafts show

2 - 7 October 2007

David Gates, a Senior Lecturer in Furniture Design at the Sir John Cass Department of Art, Media and Design, is exhibiting a collection of his furniture, including new work, at Origin - a major crafts show taking place at Somerset House, London from the 2nd to the 7th October. David designs and makes furniture from a workshop in South London, working to commission on domestic as well as commercial and public projects. Speaking of his work, David says, "Because I design and make the furniture in my own workshops I have constant control over the quality of the outcome as well as being able to immediately refine the designs. The work is rooted in simplicity and efficiency." As David explains, "My work is often utilitarian. Exposed joinery tells something of the construction of a piece, it's simplicity allows the furniture to do its job and for the integrity of the materials and construction to have a voice."

David will also be appearing on London Arts radio station Resonance FM as part of Clear Spot, a show about the Origin craft show. Clear Spot will be broadcast at 8pm on 5 October.
