Student film selected for screening at Portobello Film Festival

A film project by two brothers on the MA Audio Visual production (AVP) course about cage fighting, the world’s fastest growing sport, was selected for screening at the Portobello Film Festival this month. The film has previously been screened on Sky Sports channel 427 (The Wrestling Channel) after catching the attention of management at the station.

Jesse and Daniel Quinones’ first documentary, ‘Cage Fighter’, tells the story of ‘Dynamite’ Dean Bray (pictured left) who dreams of stardom through this no-holds-barred mix of boxing, wrestling and martial arts.

The film focuses on the five-day lead up to Dynamite’s next fight. If he wins, his career will soar to new heights; if he loses, it could all be over. During these five days Dynamite runs, hits punching bags and there is sweat and tears. Viewers see just how much he has to pay to obtain his dream of stardom in the cage.

Course Leader of the MA AVP Charlotte Worthington said she was delighted that work from the course was being chosen for broadcast on UK television.

The Quinones brothers have just received news that ‘Cage Fighter’ will be screened as part of the Portobello Film Festival (PFF) which is due to take place between 1 and 21 August. The PFF was established in 1996 as a way of providing a platform for new and innovative filmmakers and to give exposure to films created in different formats.

Jesse Quinones is a 25-year-old playwright and filmmaker who has a first class degree in Theatre Studies and Creative Writing from London Metropolitan University. In March 2007, his first play ‘Weights’ premiered at the Blue Elephant Theatre to rave reviews. Upcoming projects include a commissioned play by Soho Theatre.

Daniel is a 23-year-old filmmaker who graduated in Graphic Design and Animation from Camberwell College of Arts and specialises in camera work and editing. He has successfully placed several short films and animations into festivals across the UK. He also runs a media production company, Woolfcub Productions, with his brother.
