Rearch Assessment Exercise 2008

My research interests include:
Fine art studio practice sculpture, drawing and printmaking; how materials might be chosen and used to depict ephemeral subjects or to represent everyday adages; the construction process, in particular the repetition of fragments as a demonstration of the investment of time; historical art collections as source material; collecting and methods of display, re-scaling and containment.

Research Outcomes

Outcome 1 - Collect Transform Repeat
What happens when aspects of the studio are brought out into public view, when our collections and explorations are given the same public presentation as finished work? Do we shed a different light on finished work by exhibiting studio routines and materials? Do audiences understand or read works differently when they are presented in terms of their production?
In this exhibition, a collaboration between myself, Clare Qualmann and Elizabeth LeMoine, we sought to explore a commonality of approach in our practices, to look at processes, approaches to making and the sources of ideas. Because we share a proclivity for repetitive processes, hoarding and everyday materials, new "collective" works emerged as objects from three sources converged. The exhibition changed our perceptions of individual pieces in terms of scale and material qualities.


Outcome 2 - Collective Response
This exhibition showed the outcome of a dialogue between contemporary London artists and an historical collection. The Guildhall Art Gallery continues a novel path in supporting a project to provide a different experience from that expected by most visitors to the gallery. It is part of a deliberate shift for the London Group towards more innovative contemporary art practice.
How might I examine the works in an historical collection and reform the elements into new works? What can be discovered in the solutions the original artists found to represent the opulent surfaces of the past? Ornate frames and marble convey prosperity and permanence; can ephemeral or commonplace materials be employed, yet still communicate the qualities of the original works? What are the meanings associated with the materials I choose to use and how can these connotations be related to the sources?
