My research interests include:
Textile design; woven textile craft & design; hand loom production; material manipulation; one-off commission based practice; design for manufacture; sensory experience; transformation & intervention into digital interpretation; sympathetic machine production; holistic environmental application of textiles.

Research Outcomes


Outcome 1 - Working at the Edge: What are the creative implications for the woven textile designer in the transition from hand process to digital technology?
My paper presented at the ETN conference, Digital//Craft, reflected on my research process for the project, On the Fringe, which explored the transitional process from using craft methods in textiles to using digital technology.
My concern as a weaver was to retain the sensory and tactile qualities so necessary to enhance our living environment. To control tactile sensitivity suggests the use of the hand and mind in creative work, whereas digital technology suggests that our creativity in the future maybe be confined to that of editors and selectors rather than makers. Are we therefore as artists, designers and practitioners at a turning point in the way we develop our visual sensitivity and awareness?

Outcome 2 - On the Fringe
On the fringe is a collaborative project concerned with the changes that are required in the process of transition from what might be perceived as traditional design methodology of textiles to digital technology. The results of this project were shown at an exhibition of the same name which was timed to run alongside the Digital//Craft conference.
My own pieces for On the fringe set out to reveal how an interactive process could evolve between the hand-manipulated weave structures and digital woven jacquard and explored the idea of a fusion of traditional techniques through the use of digital manipulated imagery to create a range of jacquard weaves. The sensory aspect was further developed through the use of new fibre technology and the use of light sources and light reflecting materials as means of investigating the possibility of enhanced health and well being.
