Sir John Cass Department of Art, Media and Design

Goldsmiths Fair

24 September - 7 October 2007

Staff from The Sir John Cass Department of Art, Media and Design will be among those exhibiting contemporary jewellery and silverware at the 25th Goldsmiths Fair over the next two weeks. The Fair, the largest of its kind in the world, is an annual selling exhibition attended by 160 leading designer-makers.

JCAMD lecturer David Goodwin, is one of the few exhibiting jewellers that have worked with ‘new technology’ in his creations; utilising techniques such as computer-aided design and rapid-prototyping.

David says of his approach: ‘I utilise computer-based technologies and combine them with traditional jewellery making skills to produce work that would arguably not exist otherwise. The technological side lends itself to the complex geometric forms while the techniques of casting, stone setting and finishing allow me to leave my mark as a maker’.

Another exhibitor Alan Craxford, who leads the short course programme for Jewellery and Silversmithing at the department and has been producing jewellery for almost 30 years, will show work demonstrating his expertise in hand engraving and carving. Alan says, "My approach has always been consistent despite changes in subject matter and materials and this has been to select fine and unusual materials, combined with a very exacting technique."

The event, organised by The Goldsmiths Company, takes place the Goldsmiths Hall London EC2 from the 24th September to the 7th October, and prices start from around £100.

The Goldsmith’s Company has been actively supporting and promoting the crafts of goldsmithing, silversmithing and jewellery making for over 700 years. Through various exhibitions, fairs and other annual events, the Company has been instrumental in keeping the industry aware of the forerunners of jewellery design and silversmithing.
