Cass Interior Design student in Top 50 Young Designers

Carla Gomes, a student from the Sir John Cass Department of Art, Media and Design, is the only interior designer to be featured in an exhibition of work from the country’s top 50 young designers, as part of London Design Week.

The BA Interior Design and Technology student, was selected from candidates across the UK for the 'New Designer Selection' exhibition which showcases young design excellence. She is part of a group of only 50 outstanding young designers from across the UK after being selected at the New Designers event in July 2008 at the Business Design Centre and from its design directory.

In addition to Carla’s success, another four Cass students, who are on the BA Furniture and Product Design course, and the HND Furniture Design (now FdA Furniture Design & Realisation), have also been included on the list.

JCAMD students impress in BBC creative challenge

The challenge, issued in May to London Metropolitan University JCAMD students, aimed to highlight the importance of students as the next generation of media and film talent. In addition it sought to demonstrate students’ creative ability in responding to a commercial brief using footage from BBC Motion Gallery.

BBC Motion Gallery is the world’s most comprehensive collection of high-quality motion imagery for licensing worldwide. Usually open to media professionals, the Gallery’s partnership with JISC has opened up its content to academics and students in the UK.

Students from the MA Digital Film and Animation, MA Audio Visual Production, BA Music Technology (Sound for Media) and MA Graphic Design courses were set an exciting and challenging brief: to use BBC Motion Gallery clips to create a show reel or short film that can be used to represent Great Britain to the Olympic athletes planning to come to the UK for the 2012 Olympics."

Entrants were given just over six weeks to create a short film with a running length of 90-180 seconds using only content from the 20,000 clips found on the BBC/JISC site only.

The unanimous winner was Sanya Mihaylovic from the MA Audio Visual Production course with her entry entitled ‘Spring’. The judges felt that she successfully met the brief and that her entry told a story, building towards a fitting climax. They were also impressed that she used original music which complemented the footage. From the material available she selected a diverse mix of clips and all judges felt she showed great promise, particularly in terms of editing.

Rentaro, an MA Product Design student studying in the MA Design Suite at JCAMD, designed a product entitled "PACK". The pack includes an energy saving light bulb packaged in recycled paper which can then be transformed into a stylish lampshade. His aim was to design not only a new lighting product but also an entirely new process of recycling.
