The Scarecrow - private view invitation

This body of research focuses on curatorial practice as a means of exploring methodologies and disseminating ideas around the representation and aesthetics of anxiety, with a view to bring together traditional and contemporary interpretations of fear.

The research consists of three items: a curated exhibition, a catalogue with a text exploring the topic and a paper given at a conference that coincided with the above.

The international exhibition The Scarecrow was co-curated by Nicolas de Oliveira, Nicola Oxley and Olga Daniylopoulou (director of the Spyropoulos Foundation, Athens) at the Averoff-Tossitza Museum in Metsovo, Greece. The exhibition featured new and existing works by 31 international artists, selected by de Oliveira and Oxley, and 31 Greek artists selected by Daniylopoulou.

Artists included Jake & Dinos Chapman (UK), Ugo Rondinone (Switzerland), Hans Op de Beeck (Belgium) and Mariko Mori (Japan), among others. Collaborating Galleries included Jay Joplin/White Cube, Alison Jacques Gallery, Galerie Eva Presenhuber Mizuma Gallery, David Risley Gallery, FRAC de la Loire, Blow de La Barra, and Hales Gallery. The exhibition was funded by Alpha Bank, The Baron Tossizza Foundation, the Greek Ministry of Culture, the Greek Ministry of Finance, The National Bank of Greece and Katogi & Strofilia SA.

In the Realm of Anxiety, the text by de Oliveira, featured in the catalogue of the exhibition and examines fear as a separation between self and other, whilst stressing its creative potential as a cultural tool.

The Scarecrow - selected catalogue pages

The conference paper given by de Oliveira at the symposium echoed the main points of In the Realm of Anxiety whilst examining contemporary artistic strategies of representation. The symposium, entitled Fear in Art and Life was held at the Diaselo Conference Centre, June 30 - July 2, and included 16 speakers from Athens, Thessaloniki and London.
