Tracey Chaplin
The Pigment Compendium

Authored book

vol. 1 - A Dictionary of Historical Pigments
vol. 2 - Optical Microscopy of Historical Pigments

Elsevier Science
ISBN: 0-7506-5749-9
499 pages

co-authors: N Easthaugh, R Siddall, V Walsh

Chaplin was responsible for the overall mineralogy content of this book, and took the photographs for the Optical Microscopy volume (ISBN: 07506-4553-9). As the sections concerned were finished first, she wrote other sections of text as required. The work was evenly divided among the 4 authors.

Notwithstanding the compendium format, these two volumes were shortlisted in 2005 for the Anna Plowden Award for Research and Innovation in Conservation, having received in 2004 the bronze award in the L’OrĂ©al Art and Science of Color Prize. A review said of it "The flaws do not belittle the extraordinary acheivement of Eastaugh, Walsh, Chaplin & Siddal.... The dictionary will probably gain wider appeal as a key to unlock the door of serious pigment research..." (L. Sheldon & S. Woodcock, Icon News 1 (Nov. 2005) p. 41).

Chaplin's contribution is a summation of her collaborative research articles published from 2002 to 2005 in American Mineralogist, Physical Review B, Journal of Raman Spectroscopy, Analytical Chemistry, Infocus - proceedings of the Royal Microscopical Society, Journal of the Chemical Society - Dalton Transactions, and proceedings of Art 2002: 7th International Conference on non-Destructive Testing and Microanalysis for the Diagnostics and Conservation of the Cultural and Environmental Heritage; Institute for Conservation Science, Edinburgh Conference, 2002; Materials Research Society Symposium, 2002 and Giornata di Studio e Aggiornamento sulle Applicazioni delle Science chimiche e fisiche all'Archeologia, 2003.
