photography and time-based media
The Photography and Time-Based Media Research Group brings together staff, students and alumni of the Sir John Cass Department of Art, Media and Design for whom lens-based media are central to the production and interpretation of their work. The group supports both individual research and collaborative projects.

The group exhibits and curates exhibitions, within and outside the university, and it organises seminars and produces publications including annual journal Activate. The group is particularly interested in work that reflects the history and current interests of London's East End, the area in which the department of Art, Media and Design is situated. Links with the local community are an important part of the group's ethos, and collaborative projects with institutions, practitioners, curators and galleries are being developed. Links with other research groups within the University are made for particular projects.

The group encourages research and debate concerning the role and definition of photographic practice in contemporary art, where boundaries between disciplines have become blurred. The role of digital technology in extending traditions of photographic practice and methods of creating and disseminating work is explored. The group believes that research issues can be addressed through the pleasure of engaging with the creative process, and by reflecting on its outcomes.

The group encourages a diverse range of aesthetics and practice. Working from the British documentary tradition (understanding this in a broad and contemporary sense) it is interested in narrative and implied narrative, in the relationship between the still and moving image, in addressing issues of photographic representation and ethics, and in photography as an agent for social change.
