film and broadcast production
The Film and Broadcast Production Research Group brings together a diverse and distinctive range of creative practitioners producing research in moving image and sound, across the media of film, video, radio and television. It fosters a culture of artistic collaboration and encourages the distribution and dissemination of members' work. The group raises questions in relation to cinematic language, alternative narrative story-telling strategies, and issues of memory, consciousness and the documenting of the 'real'. It explores alternative models of distribution, exhibition and publishing, and seeks new audiences through new technologies, links with the local community, and the production of new creative tools and methods.

The group runs two regular, high-profile exhibition and distribution projects: the Big City Film Festival (www.bigcityfilmfestival.org.uk) and the NAHEMI Eat Our Shorts international student film festival (www.nahemi.org/eatourshorts), held annually at the National Film Theatre. Collaborations have included joint projects with the British Film Institute, the East London Film Festival, Adfed (the community wing of the Asian Dub Foundation), the Rich Mix Cultural Foundation, the Museum of London, the Tower Hamlets Summer University, Skillset, Kodak, The National Film & Television School, and The Wallflower Press. Thematic strands include student creativity, the role of the creative and risk-taking film and television producer, and innovative film production design. Special emphasis is placed on website design and audience interaction through collaborative media.

The group has been instrumental in organising national symposia on two themes: Animation in an Age of Convergence (2003), and Film-making Practice and Theory, Teaching and Research (2005).
