Now They Are Surrounded: Reconfigured invitation

Now they Are Surrounded: Reconfigured is an interactive work which forms part of an exhibition of the work Now they Are Surrounded: Reconfigured. This in turn is part of an event: exhibitions held simultaneously with an international symposium at the Whitechapel Art Gallery that initiated a sustained discussion on systems-theory and art.

This had particular reference to Niklas Luhmann’s book, Art as a Social System, and current debates in regard to autopoiesis, autonomy and post-autonomous art practices.

This event was organised in collaboration with London Metropolitan University and the National College of Art & Design (NCAD), Dublin. Contributors came from Canada, Netherlands, Eire and the UK. The event continues via the website and other publications and collaboration.

The Interactive work was displayed in the Gallery and simultaneously launched on the Systems Art website. It attempts to operate within the boundaries of the debates that informed the Art & Language piece and the symposium. It offers a near infinite range of configuration to further test aspects of internality and autonomy. This, with the Art & Language piece and Ferguson’s work, were presented as essay like works both independent of but constituent of the symposium.
