JCAMD student wins major award

A student from Sir John Cass Department of Art, Media and Design has won a major Design Award. Giles Wilson-Copp, a final year student on the Furniture Design and Realisation HND, won the prestigious 100% Design Award with the ‘Smart Cabinet’ he designed and made.

The prize was announced before an audience of students, professional designers and journalists at New Designers, the national graduate design exhibition. Giles’ winning piece was exhibited on a stand alongside the best work by other students from the department at the Business Design Centre in Islington. The ‘smart cabinet’ will also go on to be showcased at 100% Design, an international exhibition at Earls Court this September.

The judges described Giles work as ‘A beautifully designed and practical piece’, adding ‘The designer has really thought through this piece's application and function; it responds to modern urban lifestyles, great attention to detail.’ Giles said he was thrilled to have won the New Designers Award, " I am extremely grateful to the Judges who chose my designs and I cannot wait to go to 100% Design and hopefully taking my concept to another level."

Michael Upton, Academic Leader at the department said, " We are delighted with Giles’ achievement. The competition at New Designers is extremely strong, as our students are up against the cream of graduate designers from across in the UK. This is a significant win for the student, the department and London Metropolitan University."
