This paper will highlight some theoretical and methodological aspects of mathematics education in multicultural contexts and in programmes for Intercultural Citizenship, part of a larger project for teacher training promoted by EDIW1. We begin by describing the EDIW project and move on to consider the learning of mathematics in multicultural contexts within Europe and the role of affectivity in this process. We will conclude with some data from a research project with Portuguese pupils in Brussels.
