When one talks about teaching reading, methods and teaching materials are usually referred to. Although the issue is in many ways controversial many argue for and against the two main trends, the global' and the 'synthetic' approaches ? there is little about in what ways such a textbook could and actually does contribute to the socialisation of the children. For such an investigation, textbook pictures and stories offer themselves. In the present study, pictures found in Hungarian textbooks from different periods will be analysed and categorised. It is expected that the changes in the textbook pictures also reflect the societal changes that have taken place.
