On each side of the border between Italy and Slovenia, in the bordering regions of Italian Friuli-Venezia-Giulia and of Slovenian Primorska, there is an officially recognised national/linguistic minority. In Italy it is the Slovenian minority, while in Slovenia it is the Italian one. Both communities have the possibility of enrolling their children in maintenance model schools (from primary up to secondary school level), the main characteristic of those being the teaching language which in both cases is the language of the minority. But - as language and culture are closely related to each other and almost impossible to separate, it is our conviction that the process of language teaching involves, at least to a certain degree, the teaching of the related culture and fosters the identification with both minority language and culture.
