Citizenship, even in KS1, should help children develop their own value systems and understanding about challenging injustice. This paper reports on a small project working with 6-7 year olds through the statutory aspect of the National Curriculum in History (England)? learning about significant people in the past. Children learned about three people whose actions contributed to changing discriminatory institutional structures and attitudes. The children surprised their teachers by their maturity and understanding of issues. The paper describes the processes, identifies some areas of potential misunderstanding and provides examples of the teachers' strategies and support.
