Ireland has been dramatic transformed economically and socially in the last ten to fifteen years. There has been considerable inward migration, and key areas of Irish life such as transport and communication infrastructure, health service provision, and education have been slow to accommodate to these changes. This paper considers Citizenship and Identity Education in this context. Profound changes in Irish life have challenged what it means to be Irish and how notions of Citizenship and Identity are fostered. The paper moves from the impact of recent social and demographic changes to the role and experience of Citizenship and Identity Education. This leads to Citizenship Education provision, and suggestions for developments in this educational area based on current practice and recent research.
