Post-modernity questions the idea of modernization, reason and the use of science and technology. Lyotard challenges the ‘grand narratives’ of Progress, Emancipation or the Enlightenment, and Giddens sees it signifying epistemological doubt challenging teleological history. Globalization is associated with similar complexity, impermanence, alteration to social dynamics, and space and time de-defection. Critical citizenship education in postmodernity aims at the democratization of the educational system in order to achieve the democratization of the society. Aspiring to better schools in a better world maintains the ‘utopian sparkle’ alive. We may doubt the utopia of prosperity promised by modernity, but in post-modernity we need the nostalgia of a utopian vision for real Democracy in rights, dialogue, goods and in differentiation.
