This paper argued that representing refugees in the teaching force helps foster a cohesive society. Who is, or is not, given responsibility as a teacher sends significant messages to children and the wider society about who is valued in society and the kind of society that is promoted. An explicit aim in English education is to develop responsible citizens who participate and contribute to a just and positive multicultural society. A prerequisite to participation is a sense of belonging: including refugees in the teaching workforce sends a message that refugees belong. Participation is also important for the teaching profession; hearing and critically reflecting on voices often unheard can contribute to practice and help all children to feel valued, to belong and to actively participate.
