France has prescribed environmental education for a sustainable development for all schools from 2004. This is intended to increase awareness, abilities and responsibilities for environment and sustainable development. This paper critiques official policy and relates it to practice and resources, based on official educational websites, reports of experimental practice, and presentations of school projects. Analysis shows there official intent to support such education, and some teachers are attempting this, but it is limited to a minority, divorced from social sciences and lacks ethical and political awareness. Important and necessary links with citizenship education and not made. Teacher training on this issue has hardly begun.
