The meaning of civilisation is turning to the modern camps of the ‘I’ and ‘The Other’: continuously changing situations need be delicately balanced to prevent contradictions. Children are affected by these camps and usually have limited information. This discourse analysis of letters written by Turkish children (6 - 17 ages) on concepts of citizenship and democracy show children’s ideas about democracy, reality and their expectations, and are evidence they know much about the main concepts, the situation in the country and the levels of the political system. It could be argued that there is an increasing awareness from the general civil citizenship courses at schools that first appeared in the curriculum five years ago.
