The main challenge for teacher education is to prepare teachers for life-long professional learning in the context of the changing world, to initiate learning processes and provide useful tools for further professional development: the teacher’s task is to meet future needs of current learners, through reflection on change and anticipation of the future. Professional learning is a life-long process, and teachers learn to teach through constructivist and humanistic models. This paper discusses six case study examples from a new form of teacher education at the University of Pardubice in the Czech Republic. A professional development module has as its central component a year-long assistantship at schools, the Clinical Year. This optimalises objective determinants of professional learning processes in students.
