Multicultural education in Greece is examined as part of a project analysing multicultural teacher education in Poland, France, Greece, Iceland and the UK. Greek government policies to support the educational needs of social groups with a particular social, cultural or religious identity started in 1996. Schools designated as cross-cultural adapt the standard curriculum to meet specific needs. The six case studies analysed include designated and non-designated schools. Greece has traditionally been ethnically and religiously homogeneous, but demographic changes have led to many efforts in the last ten years in sensitizing educators and school authorities on issues concerning multicultural/intercultural education. The formal Greek educational system appears to be generally supportive of multiculturalism, in principle if not always in actual institutional practice.
