Montpellier 2007: Citizenship Education in Society.

CiCe's Ninth annual conference was held in at the Université Paul Valéry Montpellier III, Montpellier, France.

The papers presented helped set out aspects of the relationship between citizenship education and society. Such a relationship has at its core the idea of active citizenship: where citizens are engaged with their fellow citizens, operating in a democracy, proceeding to undertake social change, performing politically – doing something.

The idea of active citizenship, education towards it and the contexts in which it is enacted and developed was at the heart of a number of papers. Again contributions reflected geographical diversity and the different disciplines of CiCe members and conference delegates, with papers addressing themes including:

- Citizenship education in schools

- Citizenship education in higher education

- Teachers and citizenship education

- Tuning Educational Structures in Europe: Competencies for citizenship education and identity in higher education

- Intercultural education and equality

- Gender and identity

An inaugural lecture as CiCe President Elect was given by Pr. Dr. Christine Roland-Lévy, Maître de Conférences at the Université Paris Descartes (Paris V), in which she outlined the importance of recent research in social psychology to our understanding of identity and the education of professionals and the children and young people that they work with.
